This a very good tool and cuts very nicely. I agree that it does a nice job cutting, however, I give it 4 stars because the handles are a bit weak looking and flex easily when trying to cut live branches that approach 3 inches, and I am afraid I will snap the handle if I put too much pressure. That happens when the handles are fully extended or not...so 4 stars. With that said, it works as advertised. It can be locked closed. Be careful and it should get the job done relatively easily. I just wish the handles were sturdier.

I have a couple of hundred small hackberry trees that needed to be cleared. The last time I attempted this I had a 1 inch lopper and a folding saw which is why there were still so many-- just too much work.
I bought this tool to tackle it again this year and the difference was night and day. I could cut closer to the ground and make quick work of trees up to about 2 1/2". 3 inch trees might be possible with multiple chomps. Every cut requires four strokes but for anything over 3/4" this was THE TOOL. Muscle still required for the thick ones.
The cuts were clean and fast and I found myself mentally singing the praises for the engineering of the tool while I cleared a large area in a short time and pruned larger surrounding trees with ease. I still had to dispose of the cuttings though, dang it.
If you have much cutting to do in this size range, put away the saw and use this tool.
