SOMMER 1041V000 Reviews

SOMMER 1041V000 Review by farmboyWI "farmboywi" (Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin USA)

When my old Craftsman chain-drive garage door opener refused to adjust and tore the pulley off of its motor, I searched for something better while shopping online. I found the Sommer 3/4 hp direct-drive garage door opener. I like the new efficient design with very few moving parts. I was a bit skeptical because it's new to the USA (#1 in Europe) and there weren't many reviews of the product, though most reviews were very positive. Once set up, the opener is very quiet and gentle. It is now hard to hear the garage door opening. 2 remotes are included, as well as a wall station control. An outdoor keypad is optional. Installation took a bit longer than stated. The instructions are a bit lacking. Drawings show 2 sections of the C-rail (track) with the lettered stops facing each other on either side of the junction piece of the C-rail. Nowhere does it specifically say to slide the carriage (motor) onto the C-rail between the stops. Not hard to figure out but instructions should be clear. One drawing shows the J-arm piece with the single hole closest to the motor. The very next drawing shows just the opposite. You can watch an installation video on the company's website where it says the track comes preassembled. It does not. It ships in 2 packages, which UPS delivered on 2 different days. One package contains the track, the other has the motor, hardware, and controls. A pair of sturdy right-angle brackets for hanging the track would have been a welcome addition to the installation kit instead of the flimsy flat brackets included. The skinny remote control looks like it should slide over the buttons for opening the door to avoid activating the door while in a pocket. Overall, I am satisfied with it now that it is up. We'll see how it holds up this winter when the frost causes the concrete to heave in the garage. It is reassuring to know that everything is guaranteed for life. The Sommer opener costs about $100 more than a conventional belt, chain, or screw drive opener on sale, but looks like it is built to last.

SOMMER 1041V000 Review by Philip / Forney, Texas

I just purchased this garage door opener because of the quality reviews it received online. It took me about four hours to install. I had a Craftsman/Chamberlain chain garage door opener previously in which the sprocket broke at the motor. I did not realize how loud the old opener was until I installed this Sommer opener. Wow!!! This thing is super quiet!!! Disengage your old opener and manually lift your door slowly. That will be the only sound you hear after installing the Sommer. Time will tell on the quality, but as of now it appears to be soundly constructed. The only complaint is the clip's that me and my wife are use too on the remotes. There are no clips!! I'll program her "home link" on her car so that she does not have to carry the remote in the car. As far as myself, I park outside anyway and do not need the remote very often. I purchased the wall mount remote for the kids to enter through. With already having a door opener previously, the bracket spots had already been marked and I was able to use the same hanging brackets which aided in installation time. I found out that I had to use the laser eye's that came with the unit. The old ones that were already in place did not work with the Sommer. Go ahead and purchase your Chain drive, Screw drive, and Belt drive openers, then you'll encounter a friend with the Sommer opener and you'll be wishing you had purchased it instead!!! Seriously, its that good!!!

SOMMER 1041V000 Review by Ken -- Denton, Texas (Denton, Texas)

I received my new 3/4 horsepower opener this past Friday. So I set about to installing it over the weekend. It was a little bit of a project since my garage is fully finished with sheetrock and texture but had not been pre-designed with a garage door opener in mind.

The package arrived in a single box about 3 foot long and 1 foot wide and deep. I was slightly concerned as there was some damage to one end of the box when UPS dropped it off. But once I opened the box, I found the product to be well packaged and protected. There was no evidence of any damage inside the box. I was surprised and slighly confused as I had read some other reviews talking about 2 packages and such and the track being in a seperate package. All I can say is that was not the case with this opener as the track was in the box as well.

The PRO's --
1. Well Packaged
2. All items are seperated and package to flow with the installation process.
3. Well designed overall and makes it very easy for the homeowner to install.
4. Engineering is outstanding.
5. The fitment of parts is flawless.
6. Operation is beautiful and extremely smooth and quiet.
7. Main "operating" parts are stainless steel and will last a lifetime.

The CON's --
1. The instructions could be a little better written with better graphics.
2. The plastic pieces look cheap.
3. The main "C" bracket that holds up the far end that hangs from the ceiling is scary (will explain further down).
4. Inability to open the "eyes" in order to change the wiring.
5. Extremely cheap looking and feeling wall opener button.
6. Remotes for your car are cheesy and clumsy.
7. Does not include (pre-punched angle iron) just two flimsy pre-punched pieces of sheet metal strap.
8. The box with the lights that provides the power to the track attaches flimsy.

Like most of your kids toys or new computers; this opener arrives with a plastic bag full of manuals. I intentionally used the "Quick" "Get-r-Done" set of instructions to see how well they worked out. If a person has general common sense, then they work out fine. I would have been done installing in a couple of hours; but remember I had to basically start from scratch due to no existing openers installed in my garage.

The track assembles easily, just a simple "C" channel that inserts into 2 larger sleeves of "C" channel to make one long track or guide depending on how you look at it. The guide chain is stainless as well as the gear on the motor that runs up and down the track.

Singularly, my biggest objection to the whole thing mechanically is the little plastic "C" bracket that holds the track up in the air closest to the end where normally the motor of a regular garage door opener hangs. This small piece of plastic that slides over the hanging tack is all that holds the weight of the hanging end up. I was not comfortable with that so I took a large plastic heavy duty wire tie and ran it through the holes in my ceiling mounts and around the hanging track just to have a fail safe incase that plastic "C" bracket gave way. Have you ever tried to help someone carry a large table or piece of plywood on it's side where you just had to grip it using the strength of your fingers and squeezing while you walked? Well that is the kind of feeling this "C" piece for the installation gave me).

My only other issues were minor. The part that provides the electricity to the chain and the overhead lights that looks like a normal garage door opener simply slides onto the end of the track. It is all plastic and does not really provide a sense of security. I guess over my lifetime, I have just seen too many pieces of plastic eventually break. So again, I just added a strap and a screw to make sure that this piece never broke and fell either.

Another slight annoyance was with the lack of wiring channels along the top of the opener so that a person could easily make their wiring look neat. I used some wire ties and velcro so that wires were not just hanging all over the place.

It would be my advice not to use the 2 pieces of metal strap provided with the opener to hang the track and support it. My advice would be to run over to Home Depot or whatever hardware store you have locally and pick up some pre-punched metal angle iron that you can then attach to your ceiling. You can then cut pieces to hang down from that piece and attach and level the track. It's just common sense and it will make your install a lot easier and sturdier.

Overall, I love this opener! Not much out there that is this close to perfect. It is quiet (in fact the only sound I hear is the squeak of the garage door; not the opener at all). Mechanically it is a wonderful piece of equipment. So what if it cost a little more than the standard "break-down-all-the-time" regular garage door openers. I like buying something once and being done if I can afford it. If you need to save an extra week or two, then by all means I would say it's worth it.

Another thing I might mention is that yes it is somewhat slower than standard garge door openers; but not by much. If you read the whole manual, you will find in there that there are settings for little "dip" switches that can change this. One of the settings makes it start slightly slower, run quite fast during the middle process, and then slow down just prior to stopping. There are actually quite a few little customizations that can be done with this opener. So enjoy it.
