Cool Attic CX24MBD-2SPD Reviews

Cool Attic CX24MBD-2SPD Review by Michael Kolarits (Hinckley, Illinois, USA)

I do not own this particular model but if you do get a "whole house fan" then get a "Belt Driven" unit. It is so much quieter than any other model, especially the "direct drive" model.
The belt of the fan takes up approximately 75% of the vibration that is inherent in all fans. Where as, the direct drive is extremely noisy by comparison, because of the same vibration. (Has no noise dampening features.)
I would also make sure it is a "2 speed model with a timer and no less than a 1/3hp motor". The reason is, with the 2 speeds you can cool your home down slowly and quietly at night while sleeping or if you come home after being gone all day long and it is hot in there you can cool it down much more quickly with the high speed setting. Also, with the 1/3hp motor, it will last much longer than a 1/4hp motor. Yes, it burns a little more power but you will NOT have to replace the motor every two years or so with the larger motor.

One other important thing you should consider with this purchase is, the SHUTTER. You should get one that has the center blade "Stationary" or non-movable. The reason for this is: you will NOT HAVE TO CUT YOUR CEILING JOIST or TRUSS to install your shutter! Helps keep your home solid!

I hope this helps with your decision in purchasing a "Whole House Fan".

Cool Attic CX24MBD-2SPD Review by C. Grina "CG in Colo" (Colorado Mtns)

First.. It's installed and it works.

But Two stars because:

Like other reviewers, mine came very poorly packaged. The motor is supposed to be temporarily fastened to the frame for shipping. The slotted holes let the motor came loose and banged all over the inside. It bent the frame and the fan blades. Some hammering and twisting got it straightened enough to use. The carton was not damaged at all, so it could not have had very rough handling - just lousy packaging.

Everything is minimal. Under-engineered to a price - not to a quality point. Very junky.

The High-Low switch is the cheapest switch I have ever seen. Sure enough, it only worked intermittently. I tossed it in the trash and replaced it with a quality switch from the hardware store.

I discovered all the cheap aspects of this after I had committed a couple hours of time, holes cut in the ceiling and built a mounting frame made. I would have returned it if I were not past the point of no return.

Btw. I recommend replacing the ON/OFF switch with a timer. Convenient and prevents forgetting to turn the fan off.

Cool Attic CX24MBD-2SPD Review by B. Olson "Real World Use" (Portland, OR USA)

First of all, read Michael's review. I went from only knowing I wanted a house fan to knowing everything I needed to know about buying one just by reading his review. Of course, for my own peace of mind, I had to cross check a few things, but everything was there. THANKS MICHAEL.

Per Ventamatic installation instructions, this fan comes with the center blade on the shutter fixed, so you don't have to cut the joist.

I found the Ventamatic installation instructions very clear, though I have not yet installed it. Good in general, and in particular, the framing instructions clearly differentiated between a "no cut joist" install and a "cut joist" install (your choice). ONE THING, the text is correct for cutting the facing boards, but Figures 6a and 6b are WRONG, they show the side facing boards as not being supported by the bridges. The text is correct, which tells you to cut the side facing boards 11 inches longer (so that they will be supported by the bridges).

The wiring instructions were clear to me. It comes with a wall switch. One tip, when getting a box for the wall switch, get an "old work" box, it's much easier to install.

One thing I'm a little unclear about, I'm planning to add a timer and the instructions warn against using a solid state module to VARY THE SPEED, I wonder if that applies to a timer that does not vary the speed as well.

The instructions recommend using foam tape under the fan to reduce vibration and sound, in some other article I read the author used foam pipe insulation, split so one layer can be used. This sounds like a good approach to me.
